The Tithe – The Law Or Not

I have spent years wanting to know the truth about the tithe, and interestingly enough, depending on which church/fellowship group you meet, they all believe differently. But that’s not good enough for me, because I want to know the truth in my heart so that I can be at peace in it. I am writing this not to dissuade anyone in what they believe, but rather to just point out a few things to help them along their journey. I’ve already made my choice, I am at peace about it and new doors have and are opening before us. The Tithe – The Law Or Not!

I have been in different types of fellowships all of my life and many have been as different as they can be from one another. Some talk about giving, some about specifically tithing, some about the law and others about grace. I have seen people blessed on all sides in this and I have seen many always in need regardless of how they give. So, what is the truth? The simple truth is that financial blessings are not entirely based on how or what we give. Someone can give correctly and still live in poverty and this has to do with other issues in their lives and in their heart. The thing I want to focus on here is simply in giving something of value into His Kingdom for His purposes.

I have heard so many sermons on giving, the differences of which could fill a book. In my distress one day, the Lord told me to read Hebrews. I did. He said read it again. I did. Over and over again this went on until I finally saw what He wanted me to see. The problem was that I had heard a teaching and then it started going around, that Abraham gave a tithe before the law, therefore the tithe was not part of the law. Again, this is found in Hebrews. However, after much reading and meditating, and in context, the writer of Hebrews is not saying that. What he is suggesting, and he does suggest as he is illustrating a story, is that Abraham fulfilled the requirements of the law before the law was given.

Hebrews 7: 9-10, “One might even say (another word for this is suggest) that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, 10 because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor.“NIV

He is comparing the Old Covenant to the New and what Jesus fulfilled and what has passed away as the New Covenant fulfilled the Old one. We have to get this because it goes more into depth and most of the Church doesn’t get it and are trapped under the law, having to obey every part of it or not live in the blessings of keeping the law. This does not even touch the grace that Jesus gave His life to bestow upon us so that we can build His Kingdom.

Hebrews 8:13, “By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.”NIV

Ok, here it is in black and white:

Hebrews 7:5, “Now the LAW requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people—that is, from their fellow Israelites—even though they also are descended from Abraham.“NIV

Now, you need to hear what I am saying here and not what I’m not saying. There is a grace of giving that comes through the New Covenant that supersedes the old tithe and the different requirements of the law in giving. You see, under the New covenant we are all priests and kings. This is a different light from the scriptures and some churches/fellowships need to change their structures from operating under the laws of the old to flowing in the grace of the new. Then they will be blessed and a new freedom will come to all who are a part. There is nothing worse than having the ability to live in freedom but rather, being coerced or blinded to live in chains and prisons.

So, with the new, how do I give. I mean, I am a priest so everywhere I go, I have the ability to give into His Kingdom. How is giving measured? It is measured by value. What is value? Value is what we assign to wages and things. If I work so many hours at a specific task, there is a value per hour assigned and that is what that hour is worth for me. If I sell something and earn a commission, then that is the value of my time and effort for that sale. The value of an object can be part of this along with the cost of the materials and/or the demand for it.

Now, I can give money to others and as a love offering. I can also give my time as a love offering because it also has value. They are synonymous. Many call for volunteers to help in many situations. It doesn’t mean they are not giving anything of value to help, rather, they are but aren’t charging anything for their services. The benefactor still receives value. One of the things I dislike the most is where church/fellowship leaders look at giving records to base their decisions on providing help to others. It is required by the tax law to keep accounting records, but the way they can be used is the issue. If one only looks at the money side, they might miss the thing the Lord is telling them to do. Sometimes people need to receive a blessing even if they aren’t doing things the way they should. Sometimes this opens the door to their heart to see things they otherwise wouldn’t have seen.

There are many areas we can give value towards. There are many good things to give towards. If you are concerned about the tithe, simply give more than the tithe but do it specifically as a grace gift and not as the law. Paul talked a lot about the law, but he talked a lot more about grace. Do what’s in your heart to do. The Lord puts it on our hearts what He wants us to do. We know what’s right.

I am now free from the law. I can go into any of the fellowships and give under grace knowing that His grace blessings will continue to pour into my life. There is more abundance in the New than in the Old. There is freedom. Choose the people you fellowship with. Are the things the Lord is telling you in agreement with those who you walk with? If not, why not? It might be time to make some changes. Sometimes we have to walk alone for a while before we start connecting with those who are like minded. It doesn’t mean we isolate as there are always those we can help and should. I am talking about on a peer level. Use wisdom.

May the Lord shower His blessings all over you. May you have the grace to repent, to change course, and get on the path He has for you. Life and healing to every part of your being. Peace to rule and reign in your heart.

Janiece and I travel and minister to individuals and groups as doors open for us to go. We are starting a new thing this year. We will be going to communities, as the Lord leads, and booking hotel meeting rooms to do concerts. We will invite those from the hotel as well as the community. We will connect to other churches and organizations in those communities to help those who desperately need help, and who, perhaps won't come into a church building. We share His love to those who haven’t heard of their Father’s love for them and also minister in song. We’ve both been through a lot and have been healed and restored and that we have to pass on to others. We can speak through truth and experience because we’ve been there. If you would like to book us for a concert, event, speaking and/or ministry meeting, please use our CONTACT page. We hope we have helped to encourage you to go on and find the wonderful destiny God has planned for you. Psalm 139. Fly higher…
