Adventure: 4 Hour Trip Becomes 10.5

ADVENTURE, ADVENTURE, ADVENTURE??? Our trip from San Antonio to Houston, Tx: OK, we fin-aaaaaaaly got to Houston town at 7:35pm… We left San Antonio at 10:10am… 10.5 hours that normally take around 3.5. We had a leak in the heater core while we were staying in SA for about a month and decided to pay the big bucks to get it fixed at a dealer in Boerne before this trip, just felt it was the right thing although I could’ve found a place much cheaper and if I would’ve had the time, I could’ve done it myself. The repair came with a 2 year warranty and the service manager, Mike said to call him if we needed anything on our 1200 mile journey to Daytona Beach. I should have noticed there might just be a bit more to this journey from that simple statement. I did notice it. Just outside of 1604 on I-10 East this morning the temperature gauge pegs to Hot. I pulled over, opened the hood and coolant was everywhere and all over the pavement. One of the heater hoses had come off from the heater core. What were we going to do. We had roadside assistance but Mike said to call him.

I called Mike and he gave me several alternatives including a tow truck back to Boerne, almost 50 miles in the opposite direction. I ended up pushing the hose back on the heater core and got the new clip to lock, filled it with water we had with us and we went on to Seguin as they had a dealership there who was waiting for us. We were there for over 4 hours as they made sure everything was ok including a 20 minute or so trip for them to take it down the freeway to make sure. Of course this also included them taking lunch as we got there right before lunch. So, seeing a Bill Millers BBQ across the freeway, we took advantage of some good food. Yum! Meanwhile, my mother and sister were waiting halfway to Houston in Schulenberg at Frank’s Restaurant for us to meet her for lunch. (It is important to note that during this so-called wasted time in Seguin, I adjusted our reservation in Houston with Hilton, got a special offer and we ended up getting 3 nights free in Orlando at our choosing plus a certificate for $200 for two more nights anywhere we wanted. Not a bad use of wasted time. Adding the two nights free we already had in Orlando, that makes about a week we will need to go to the AMTC Summer SHINE in July. Impressive!)

So, they finally said everything is working great and they added a gallon of antifreeze. So we trucked on down the highway. We stopped in Schulenberg and had a great time with mom and sis. Yes! They waited over 3 hours at the restaurant for us. That’s love. Then we took off again. About 30 more miles and then…

On our wat to Weimer, about 30 or 40 more miles, we had to slow down for a wreck. As we were passing the wreck, an 18 wheeler in the ditch due to a blowout, the temp gauge again goes beyond the “H”, the Check Engine Light comes on and the engine loses power. I pulled over to the shoulder and shut the engine down thinking this time the engine is toast, burned up, crispy critter. I got out with traffic speeding by, popped the hood and checked out the engine. Coolant was fine and no leaks. Hmmm! I got back in and started the engine and the temp is normal again. Yep! Sure! Right! That just doesn’t normally happen. I’m one of those shade tree mechanics, just not certified so I knew quite a bit.

We had just passed a Ford Dealership about a mile behind us so we got on the frontage road and stopped in at 5pm as I called the Dealership in Boerne just to get Mike’s voicemail. As I was talking to the Service Manager in Weimer, whose mechanics had just shut down for the day, great, Mike called. He was on the phone with the dealership in Seguin when I had called and they had filled him in on what they did. Seems the problem this time was caused by an air pocket in the system that went across the thermostat immediately overheating it falsely. So again, we got back in and took off down the road. This time had my heart pounding. I guess the accident had added to it.

I was planning for us to be at the hotel around 3 pm long ahead of the rush hour and in more than enough time for our free evening dinner and a glass or two of wine. RELAXATION! YES! We arrived in East Houston around 6:15 and the traffic wasn’t too bad but we had a way to go to the Woodlands north of Houston. Most Homewood Suites finish up the evening meal around 7:30 and it seemed we might not make it in time, so I called to see if they could save us some plates, which they do. STRESS RELIEF! Dinner was from 6-8. Ahhh, we could make that easily. Well, then the traffic slowed and then suddenly about 3 miles from the hotel the engine does the same thing AGAIN only this time the Oil Light comes on too, even though the oil gauge pressure was reading fine. ENGINE FAILURE? I pulled over with cars whizzing by, shut the engine down and then restarted to see if it reset. Nope! Not this time and it was lightly raining. Ha! I’m not getting out this time. I tried it several more times and the same thing. Hmmmm! What should we do? We prayed and continued on listening intently to the sound of the engine for problems. The exit we needed to take was closed so we had to go a few miles even further before the U-turn. THE SUSPENSE INCREASED! The engine sounded ok, so we kept on going. We finally made it to the HS, turned off the engine and I expected to see smoke and vapor go everywhere. Not so! The engine seemed fine. Sooooo, after all that time on the road we FINALLY went in, sat down to Salisbury Steak, mashed potatoes, Broccoli and Cheese, Strawberry Shortcake, my fave, and some nice smooth Merlot. Janiece and I walked out by the pool with the nice waterfall and I took the following picture of the beautiful sunset over the pool with the 3 palms. We were at peace and His grace covered us. The storm was over, we made it and He seemed to be showing us His awesome love to us with the sunset.

Janiece and I travel and minister to individuals and groups as doors open for us to go. We are starting a new thing this year. We will be going to communities, as the Lord leads, and booking hotel meeting rooms to do concerts. We will invite those from the hotel as well as the community. We will connect to other churches and organizations in those communities to help those who desperately need help, and who, perhaps won't come into a church building. We share His love to those who haven’t heard of their Father’s love for them and also minister in song. We’ve both been through a lot and have been healed and restored and that we have to pass on to others. We can speak through truth and experience because we’ve been there. If you would like to book us for a concert, event, speaking and/or ministry meeting, please use our CONTACT page. We hope we have helped to encourage you to go on and find the wonderful destiny God has planned for you. Psalm 139. Fly higher…
