Overcoming Rage
October 7th, 2008 at 7:39 am (Joseph's Story)
Why do people go out of control? How can they overcome the rage inside? We hear the horror stories of people wondering how they could do what they did. How does this happen? What can make a difference? Overcoming Rage!
I know that people say a lot of negative things about the spiritual realm, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist and that it doesn’t have a big impact on our lives. We all want to make sure we are sane, so why would we buy into something we can’t see? We believe in the wind even though we can’t see it. We believe in gravity even though we can’t see it either. We can believe in the spiritual realm simply because the scriptures say it is true. In addition to this, I can because I have experienced it. Let me illustrate with a personal story between my wife and I. This is the truth. You can choose to believe it or not. The bottom line is that we did get the victory.
Shortly after Jaan and I were married, a spirit of rage showed its ugly face. She had been through so much and there was so much anger and so many judgments from all of the trauma she had been through. When I said something to her a trigger was pushed and this spirit came violently to the surface. Time after time this had happened, but we didn’t know what it was. We had the holes in the walls to prove it where she punched her fist through the drywall. One night though, was different. This was the appointed time of deliverance.
We were in the kitchen and she was leaning back against the inside corner of the counter. I said something to her and all of a sudden she slammed her fist down on the counter. For the first time I realized I wasn’t looking at her, but into the eyes of the spirit of rage. Immediately I remembered the words of Jesus as I looked directly into its eyes and spoke. “Peace, be still in Jesus’ Name.” Immediately she slumped.
As I was wondering what to do next, Holy Spirit spoke gently to me, “Give her a hug.”
Well that was the last thing I wanted to do right then. I was wondering if I heard correctly, so I decided to ask her first. “Can I hug you?” I asked rather sheepishly.
She looked up at me and in an irritated but controlled voice replied, “If you must!”
Boy, I really didn’t want to do this, but I did. As I hugged her, something happened in the spiritual realm.
After a short moment, she looked at me in amazement with fear in her voice, “Did you hear that?”
I responded cheerfully by saying, “I sure did.”
We discussed what we heard and the stories were exact opposites. She had heard the sound of the wings of a dragon-like creature taking off from the ground outside and saw it. I had heard the wings of a dove cooing and saw a dove on the fence. A dove represents the Holy Spirit.
After the deliverance, there was a time of ministry. The Lord brought healing and removed the triggers that caused the rage to manifest. John 3:20, “Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.” We must be willing to humble ourselves and admit the truth. There are things we hide behind. There are masks we wear. There are things we do in secret that we must confess to the Lord. He sees everything anyway and many times others do also. The only ones we really end up deceiving are ourselves. This is why the demons cried out when the anointing came around. The light exposes the darkness. Darkness can’t hide.
There were still times that Jaan got angry after this, but it was never to the magnitude before this. There used to be a super human strength that helped her overcome. Sometimes we would wrestle with each other in play and she was much stronger than I. After this night it was gone and so was the extra strength. She knew she was loved and protected so that she didn’t have to protect herself anymore with the spirit. That was Father’s responsibility now.
I want to take some time here to share something about spiritual entities. We, as people, have a choice of who we are going to trust. We can trust in the Lord, in ourselves or in someone or something else. We live in a physical world amongst a spiritual world that we usually can’t see. There are angels and demons that exist and sometimes they manifest. Some people choose to give part of themselves to a demonic power. This can happen knowingly or unknowingly. I will suggest that most people, who have a split personality, are partially controlled by an evil spirit. Sometimes this is passed on to the next generation and sometimes it can be caused from a traumatic experience. They can give a spirit access to part of their minds to handle things when a certain situation arises. This might also happen from being unconscious. Sometimes these people black out and don’t remember anything they’ve done until after the spirit hides again. One of the best examples of this is in Luke 8:26-36
The Healing of a Demon-possessed Man
They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee. When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” For Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.
Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
“Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. And they begged him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.
A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into them, and he gave them permission. When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.
When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.
The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.”
Each one of us can be healed and delivered. Jesus is the same today as He was then. Deliverance and healing are real. There is hope.
